Guillan-Barré Syndrome Outbreak in Pune Subsides, Only One New Case in Four Days

Pune, 5th March 2025: The Guillan-Barré Syndrome (GBS) outbreak that began in Pune on 9th January has significantly declined, with only one new case reported in the Pune region over the past four days. This marks a substantial decrease from the initial surge in GBS cases, indicating that the outbreak is now waning.
The Nanded City area in Pune had previously reported the highest number of GBS cases. However, the incidence of new cases has been decreasing across Pune and the entire state for the past two weeks. Between 2nd and 5th March, only one new GBS case was reported statewide, further suggesting that the outbreak is subsiding.
According to the Maharashtra Public Health Department, the state has recorded a total of 223 GBS cases to date, with 195 confirmed diagnoses. Pune continues to have the highest number of cases, distributed as follows: 45 in Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) areas, 95 in newly incorporated villages, 33 in Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), and 36 in rural Pune. The rest of the state accounts for 14 cases.
Of the total cases, 29 patients are currently receiving treatment in intensive care units, with 14 on ventilators. 174 patients have been discharged after successful treatment. However, 11 deaths have been attributed to GBS.
As the number of new cases declines, the PMC’s health department is considering discontinuing financial assistance to GBS patients. Currently, eligible patients under the urban poor scheme receive up to Rs 2 Lakh, while others may receive up to Rs 1 Lakh. If approved by the PMC commissioner, this financial aid could cease.
