Heavy Rains Cause Major Electricity Outage Across Pune
Reported by Sumit Singh
Pune, 4th June 2024: A major power outage has struck several parts of Pune, including Porwal Road, Dhanori, Viman Nagar, Kalyani Nagar and Wadgaonsheri, following a bout of significant rainfall today. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that Wadgaonsheri was the hardest hit, recording 114.5 mm of rain in just a few hours. The downpour has caused severe waterlogging in various low-lying areas, significantly disrupting daily life.
Nishikant Raut, the Public Relations Officer for the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL), told Punekar News that the heavy rain and subsequent waterlogging have led to widespread power outages. “Our team is actively working to restore power. Several areas have already regained electricity, but due to the heavy rain and waterlogging, especially in Porwal Road and Dhanori, the restoration work is being delayed. We aim to have power restored in all affected areas before midnight,” Raut stated.
Residents have expressed frustration over the power outage. Saurabh Ghosh, a resident of Viman Nagar, shared his exasperation on social media: “No electricity after a short downpour in Viman Nagar. It’s been more than two hours now. Why can’t the infrastructure handle this weather, given that we have rains each year? @MSEDCL, your phone numbers aren’t working. When will the electricity be back?”
Jay Sutar, an IT professional, described his predicament, saying, “I was working from home due to the election results, and suddenly there was no power after the rain. It’s been five hours now. I planned to go to the office, but the heavy traffic and rain made it impossible.”
