Heavy Rains Forecast for Ghat Regions of Pune as Monsoon Gains Strength Across Maharashtra
Pune, 27th June 2025: After a brief lull, the monsoon is regaining momentum across Maharashtra, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing an orange alert for the ghat sections of Pune. The warning highlights the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and wind speeds reaching up to 60 kmph in the coming days.
While Pune city itself is expected to experience light to moderate showers during this period, weather officials are closely monitoring developments that could intensify rainfall across various parts of the state.
“Rainfall activity has resumed over the Konkan and Marathwada regions from Thursday onwards,” said SD Sanap, a senior scientist with IMD Pune. He noted that these areas had been witnessing below-normal rainfall until now, delaying agricultural activities. “In many places, sowing had already taken place, but a prolonged dry spell was causing concern among farmers,” he added.
The resurgence in rain is being attributed to the formation of a low-pressure system over the northwestern Bay of Bengal, near the coasts of Odisha and West Bengal. This system is accompanied by a cyclonic circulation that extends up to 7.6 km above mean sea level and tilts toward the south with increasing altitude.
“In addition, a trough line is stretching from the northeast Arabian Sea to this cyclonic circulation. It passes through regions such as south Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh. These meteorological conditions are contributing to the renewed rainfall activity,” Sanap explained.
The IMD’s orange alert urges residents in the affected ghat areas to remain cautious, particularly in regions prone to landslides and flash floods. Authorities are advised to take appropriate safety measures as the state braces for more active monsoon days ahead.
