New Delhi, 17th February 2024: In a historic triumph, the Indian women’s badminton team clinched a medal at the Badminton Asia Team Championship (BATC) after defeating Hong Kong 3-0 in the quarter-finals on Friday. This marks the first time the Indian women’s team has advanced to the semi-finals, ensuring a medal in the prestigious tournament.

India’s next challenge lies against Japan, following their remarkable victories over top-seed China and Hong Kong. The team’s success was propelled by stellar performances from PV Sindhu, Asmita Chaliha, and the doubles pairing of Ashwini Ponnappa and Tanisha Crasto.
PV Sindhu’s comeback after a four-month injury hiatus proved spectacular as she secured a hard-fought victory against Lo Sin Yan Happy with a score of 21-7, 16-21, 21-12, giving India the initial lead.
The women’s doubles duo of Tanisha Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappa exhibited exceptional prowess, defeating Yung Nga Ting and Yung Pui Lam with a commanding score of 21-10, 21-14.

Asmita Chaliha sealed the quarter-final victory with a dominant performance against Yeong Sum Yi, triumphing with a scoreline of 21-12, 21-13.

Meanwhile, the Indian men’s team is set to face Japan in their quarter-final encounter today, aiming to replicate the women’s success and advance to the next stage of the championship.
