HMPV Alert: Pune Municipal Corporation Sets Up 50-Bed Isolation Ward for Patients, Urges Public to Follow Hygiene Guidelines

Pune, 6th January 2025: In response to the detection of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases in the country, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has ramped up its health preparedness by establishing a dedicated 50-bed isolation ward at Naidu Infectious Diseases Hospital. However, screening of passengers at Pune’s Airport, a key point of entry, is yet to commence, raising concerns about the potential spread of the virus.
HMPV, which has recently caused an outbreak in China, has now spread in India. The first case in the country was reported in Bengaluru, where an eight-month-old girl tested positive for the virus. Given the growing threat, health systems nationwide have been put on high alert, and the state health department has instructed PMC to take immediate precautionary measures.
Concerns Over Lack of Screening at Pune Airport
Despite the proactive measures at Naidu Hospital, PMC has yet to reinstate passenger health screenings at Pune Airport. During the COVID-19 pandemic, similar checks had been instrumental in identifying and isolating suspected cases, effectively controlling the outbreak. With flights arriving daily from Bengaluru—where HMPV cases have been reported—PMC officials have acknowledged the risk but said a decision on airport screenings will be made in the next meeting.
Health Chief Dr. Nina Borade stated, “Passenger screening at Pune Airport has not yet started. A decision regarding this will be taken soon besides railway station and bus stands. Although discussions about these viruses are ongoing, there is no need for panic. PMC’s health system is prepared, and we have set up a 50-bed isolation ward at Naidu Hospital to handle cases if necessary.”
Dr. Borade also urged citizens to follow basic hygiene practices and seek medical attention if they experience symptoms such as fever, cough, severe weakness, vomiting, or difficulty breathing.
