How China Thinks And Plans For The Long Term: Key Discussion At Pune’s Gokhale Institute

Pune, 11th September 2026: Pune Samvad, in association with the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics (GIPE), hosted a book launch and discussion on India-China relations at Kale Hall, GIPE, focusing on China’s strategic thinking, long-term planning and what India needs to understand about its neighbour.
The programme marked the launch of On China: Reflections on Chinese Statecraft, authored by Vijay Gokhale, former Foreign Secretary of India and former Ambassador of India to China, and Chirayu Thakkar, CEO of the Centre for Strategic Affairs.
The book launch was followed by a conversation on “how China thinks, how it plans for the long term, and what India needs to understand about its neighbour.” The discussion examined China’s strategic approach, statecraft and long-term national objectives, along with the evolving dynamics of India-China relations.
Gokhale and Thakkar discussed the historical, strategic and diplomatic dimensions of India’s relationship with China. They emphasised the importance of understanding China’s worldview, political system, strategic culture, economic priorities and approach to international relations to assess its actions and the future trajectory of bilateral ties.
The speakers also discussed the opportunities and challenges facing India-China relations and the need for India to adopt a nuanced and long-term approach in dealing with China. They stressed the importance of strategic preparedness, sustained dialogue and informed public discourse in navigating the relationship.
The discussion highlighted that India-China relations need to be assessed beyond immediate geopolitical developments, with a deeper understanding of China’s long-term objectives and statecraft.
Commodore S. L. Deshmukh and Dr. Vishal Gaikwad, Officiating Deputy Registrar of the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics, were among those present at the programme. Members of the academic community, researchers, students and other guests also attended.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks to the speakers, dignitaries and participants.
