Pune, 12th February 2025: In a swift response to a reported kidnapping, Pune Police successfully recalled a private jet bound for Bangkok, carrying Rishiraj Sawant, son of former Maharashtra Minister and MLA Tanaji Sawant. The incident, which initially caused a stir in Pune, turned out to be a misunderstanding, as investigations revealed Rishiraj was travelling with two friends.

Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar provided crucial details about the operation to intercept the aircraft. “We intervened before any untoward incident could occur,” Kumar stated. “We emailed the air traffic administration, which led to the successful recall of the plane.”

The police action was prompted by a kidnapping complaint filed by Tanaji Sawant. Despite the revelation that Rishiraj was on a voluntary trip, the complaint has not been withdrawn as of now. Commissioner Kumar emphasized that had the plane left Indian airspace, recalling it would have been significantly more challenging.

The incident unfolded on Monday afternoon when Rishiraj Sawant departed from Pune Airport on a chartered flight. Concerns arose when his family lost contact with him, leading to speculation about a possible kidnapping. This information quickly spread on social media, causing alarm.

Responding to the family’s distress, Pune Police acted promptly. They established checkpoints on major city roads and launched search operations at key locations, including the airport. Air traffic control was contacted, resulting in the plane’s return to Pune.

Commissioner Kumar noted that the investigation is ongoing. “We are still looking into whether Rishiraj Sawant was travelling to Bangkok for a business meeting,” he added.
