HPCL Fuel Supply Hit by SAP Glitch; Petrol Dealers Assure No Shortage in Pune

Pune, 8th May 2025: A major technical failure in the SAP system of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) has disrupted fuel distribution across the country, halting supply from HPCL depots to petrol pumps for over 36 hours. However, fuel dealers and authorities have assured the public that the disruption is temporary and there is no shortage of fuel.
The glitch has affected HPCL’s internal systems responsible for managing supply logistics, which has caused a breakdown in fuel movement. While HPCL’s technical teams are working “on a war footing” to fix the issue, even manual operations have been hampered due to the system’s interconnected processes.
“There is no shortage of petrol or diesel. This is purely a technical glitch in HPCL’s system, and efforts are underway to resolve it swiftly,” said Amit Gupta, President of the Federation of All Maharashtra Petrol Dealers Association (FAMPEDA). He urged the public to remain calm and avoid panic-buying, emphasizing that other oil companies like Indian Oil and Bharat Petroleum are operating normally and ensuring adequate fuel supply.
Gupta further noted that if the system restoration takes longer, it could take up to 48 more hours for HPCL’s supply operations to normalize. “We request everyone not to believe in rumors. The supply chain will stabilize soon,” he added.
In Pune, local fuel dealers have also reassured residents about fuel availability. Dhruv Ruparel, President of the Petrol Dealers Association (PDA), Pune, said, “We are in constant touch with HPCL officials and receiving hourly updates. Their IT team is actively working on the problem. We’re hopeful that our dealers will start receiving supplies soon.”
Ruparel echoed Gupta’s appeal to citizens, stating, “There is no need to panic. Sufficient fuel is available at pumps run by other oil marketing companies. We urge people not to crowd stations unnecessarily.”
Despite the disruption, many petrol stations in Pune reported normal operations, thanks to supplies from non-HPCL depots. However, if the issue persists beyond the next two days, longer queues and temporary shortages at HPCL-affiliated outlets may become more noticeable.
