IMD Advises Precautions as Pune Experiences Severe Weather Conditions
Pune, 13th April 2023: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a nowcast warning at 4 pm, stating that thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and light to moderate spells of rain with gusty winds reaching 30-40 kmph are very likely to occur at isolated places in the districts of Ratnagiri, Pune, Satara, Sangli and Kolhapur during the next 3-4 hours. The IMD has advised people to take necessary precautions while moving out.
The IMD has also issued a weather forecast for the next few days. From April 13 to April 18, the sky is expected to be partly cloudy with thundery activity and lightning likely. Short period strong winds and light rain are very likely during this period. On April 15, 16, 17, and 18, the sky is expected to become mainly clear, becoming partly cloudy towards the afternoon/evening. Thundery activity, lightning, and very light rain are likely during this period.
In addition to the weather forecast, the IMD has issued impact-based advisories to the public. The IMD has advised people to avoid stepping out in afternoons to prevent instances of heat exhaustion and dehydration. During the times of gusty winds, people should remove any plant pots from windows/balcony railings, as strong winds can push them off the sill or railing, injuring residents. This could even be fatal for somebody. People are also advised not to take shelter under trees during thundery activity and to avoid using mobile phones and unplugging electronic appliances during periods of lightning.
The IMD has also advised people to keep windows and doors closed during periods of strong wind and to avoid travel during times of strong wind/lightning. Drivers are advised to drive slowly as visibility may reduce, and roads may be slippery due to the rain spells.
The IMD has issued these advisories to ensure the safety of the public during the expected severe weather conditions in the coming days. People are urged to take these advisories seriously and take necessary precautions to avoid any unfortunate incidents.
