Pune, 13th April 2023: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted below average monsoon in the country this year due to El Nino. Therefore, the government has ordered water resources and local bodies to plan the available water resources until 31st August.

According to this, measures will be taken by the municipal corporation to conserve water, and till the end of August, the municipality is testing cutting the water supply for one day a week in different parts of the city.

Administrative sources clarified that after determining how much water will be saved due to this water cut, the next decision will be taken. The administration will also prepare a report on how much water will be saved if water is given every day by reducing the current water supply time.

The municipal corporation exercised similar water conservation measures in 2015 when the water storage in the Khadakwasla dam chain, which supplies water to the city, was greatly depleted. At that time, the government had sanctioned only 9.5 TMC of water available in the dam for seven months from October to May. Only 8.5-9 TMC of water was used in these ten months due to water-saving done by citizens, water allocation, and planning done by the Municipal Corporation. After good rains in June, this reduction was withdrawn. However, at that time, 34 new villages were not included in the municipal corporation, and the municipality was providing raw water to these villages.

Now there are 34 villages in the municipality and they have to supply water by tankers in large quantities throughout the year. The water demand of the city has also increased by about 30 to 35 per cent in the last seven years. In such a situation, the Municipal Corporation will have to plan accordingly to meet the water demand.
