IMD Issues Red Alert for Ghat Areas, Yellow Alert for Pune as Palkhis Enter City

Pune, 20th June 2025: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall in the Ghat regions of Pune district and a yellow alert for Pune city on Friday, coinciding with the arrival of the Sant Tukaram Maharaj and Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj palkhis in the city.
The heavy rain warning has raised concerns over the safety of devotees and the smooth passage of the palkhi processions. Authorities have urged citizens to remain cautious, especially near low-lying areas and riverbanks.
According to rainfall data recorded in the last 24 hours till 9 am on Friday, several parts of Pune district have received substantial rainfall, particularly in the Ghat and rural sections.

While Kurvande, Girivan, and Malin recorded the highest rainfall, urban centres like Magarpatta, Shivajinagar, Hadapsar, and Chinchwad also received moderate showers.
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), along with the district administration and traffic police, has already made elaborate arrangements to handle the large influx of Warkaris (devotees) and ensure their safety amid the adverse weather conditions. Temporary shelters, water drainage teams, and medical units have been deployed along the palkhi routes.
Authorities have appealed to citizens and Warkaris to follow safety instructions and avoid venturing near overflowing streams or low-lying zones.
The IMD has forecast continued rainfall in the region over the next 48 hours. The administration is monitoring the situation closely and has assured timely updates and responses.
