Pune, 17th August 2023: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has offered a respite from the prolonged dry conditions that have plagued Pune and Maharashtra since the beginning of August. An encouraging development has arisen as the IMD issued a yellow alert for Pune and the surrounding areas, forecasting heightened rainfall from August 18 to 20.

Amidst these concerns, the water deficit has been a growing worry for the state. Presently, the water deficit poses potential challenges for Maharashtra in the near future. Recent statistics indicate that Pune district has received a mere 52 mm of rainfall as of Wednesday, significantly below the normal average of 160.5 mm for this period.

The entire state of Maharashtra is grappling with a rainfall deficit of 70 percent, with recorded rainfall at a mere 44.70 mm, a substantial deviation from the normal average of 151.20 mm.

Anupam Kashyapi, the Head of the Weather Forecasting Division, tweeted that a low-pressure system is anticipated to materialize over the northwest Bay of Bengal. This system is expected to catalyze a partial resurgence of the monsoon across Maharashtra. Consequently, the IMD has projected an escalation in rainfall activity, particularly over regions such as Vidarbha, Marathwada, and Konkan. The forecast foresees instances of thunderstorms and isolated heavy rainfall between August 18 and 20, prompting the issuance of the yellow alert.

Remarkably, this break in the monsoon season arrives as Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad’s water situation experiences improvement. The primary dams that supply water to the area are currently either at or surpassing 80 percent of their capacity. Notably, dams like Khadakwasla and Pawana have initiated water discharges as they approach maximum capacity, thus allaying concerns about water availability in the vicinity.

As the period of the yellow alert approaches, residents and authorities are strongly advised to remain abreast of weather forecasts and undertake essential precautions to ensure safety and preparedness for potential thunderstorms and heavy rainfall.
