IMD Predicts Rainfall to Ease from Today in Pune
Pune, 17th September 2025: A sharp spell of heavy rain lashed Pune city on Tuesday afternoon, surprising residents after a noticeable dip in rainfall over the previous 24 hours. The showers, which lasted between 12.20 pm and 1.30 pm, caused brief disruptions even though the total rainfall was not exceptionally high.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Shivajinagar recorded 42.5 mm of rain between 12.30 pm and 2 pm, while Chinchwad, Malin, and Dudulgaon received 2 mm each. Officials clarified that the downpour appeared more intense because it was concentrated within a short 90-minute window instead of being spread across several hours.
“From Wednesday, rainfall intensity is likely to reduce, making it largely safe to travel, including through ghat sections,” an IMD official said. “Our national forecast indicates light to moderate rain or thunderstorms at several places, with isolated heavy rainfall expected over Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada on Wednesday, and over Konkan and Goa during Wednesday and Thursday. Pune is likely to get light to moderate rain on Wednesday, followed by light showers thereafter.”
Alerts and Forecast
The IMD has placed Konkan, Madhya Maharashtra, and Vidarbha under a yellow alert until September 19, replacing the red and orange warnings that were in effect earlier. No alerts have been issued beyond September 19 as of now.
Statewide Impact
Persistent rainfall over the past few days has damaged crops in several parts of Maharashtra and triggered multiple rescue operations. In Ahilyanagar district’s Pathardi taluka, an NDRF team was deployed to evacuate residents stranded in floodwaters. The State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC), along with the Pune district administration and police, facilitated a green corridor to enable the team’s quick movement.
Rescue operations in Pathardi, Shevgaon, and Karjat talukas helped bring 230 citizens to safety using inflatable boats, ropes, life jackets, and buoys. “Relief material from the state disaster management department was pre-positioned at corporations, councils, and tehsil offices in vulnerable areas. In Parbhani district, four workers trapped in the Thuna riverbed at Purna block were rescued by local disaster teams equipped with boats and life-saving gear,” a disaster management official said.
Meanwhile, an SDRF team was sent to Jalgaon district to respond to flood-related situations arising from heavy rain.
Mumbai Situation
In Mumbai, rainfall continued on Tuesday though at a moderate level compared to Monday’s intense spell. The IMD’s Colaba observatory recorded 26.7 mm in the 24 hours ending at 8.30 am Tuesday, while the Santacruz observatory registered 31.2 mm. This came just a day after parts of south Mumbai experienced triple-digit rainfall.
