IMD Predicts Thunderstorms and Light Showers in Pune Till May 16; Day Temperatures Dip

Pune, 12th May 2025: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted light rain, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, across Pune city and surrounding rural areas over the next several days, extending until May 16.
Several parts of Pune witnessed light rainfall on Saturday, with Magarpatta reporting 5.5 mm in the last 24 hours, according to data from IMD’s local observatory.
The unsettled weather has led to a drop in daytime temperatures. “Day temperatures are expected to stay below the seasonal average, hovering between 32°C and 34°C — about 3°C to 4°C cooler than usual,” an IMD official said.
Temperature data from key stations showed a mixed trend. While Shivajinagar recorded 36.2°C — around 1.3 degrees below normal — Lohegaon saw a rise, registering 38.6°C, slightly above normal by 1.1 degrees.
Despite the forecast, Sunday morning began on a sunny and humid note before cloud formation increased later in the day. “Humidity levels remained high in the first half, but atmospheric instability is likely to bring more cloud cover and scattered rainfall,” said the official.
The current weather pattern is attributed to upper air circulations over Madhya Pradesh and surrounding areas, combined with a trough line extending from the east-central Arabian Sea to north Chhattisgarh. These systems are influencing the overall atmospheric conditions across Maharashtra.
“We are observing a sustained drop in both maximum and minimum temperatures in many districts due to these synoptic conditions,” said Dr. S.D. Sanap, senior scientist at IMD Pune.
The cooling trend has also been noted across other parts of the state. In Marathwada, cities like Osmanabad, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, and Beed recorded temperature dips between 1.1°C and 2.2°C. Meanwhile, in Vidarbha, nearly all stations reported a fall in mercury ranging from 0.9°C to 4.4°C.
Despite the cooling trend, heat persisted in parts of eastern Maharashtra. Four locations in Vidarbha, including Akola — which emerged as the state’s hottest spot at 41.3°C — continued to record temperatures above 40°C.
