Pune, January 5: The Pune traffic police on Thursday penalized 4717 motorcyclists for not wearing helmet and collected Rs 4.67 lakh. On Wednesday state transport minister Diwakar Raote had announced to make helmet use compulsory across the state.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic branch) Sarang Awad said that the crackdown will continue in the weeks ahead. “We had been penalising about 800-1000 persons every day for not wearing the safety gear. The action has been intensified now. It has been proved that helmet use can save one’s life. In 2015, out of 240 deaths of two-wheeler riders only one of them was wearing helmet,” Awad added.
