India and Australia Begin 3rd Edition of Joint Military Exercise AUSTRAHIND in Pune
Aundh, 8th November 2024: The third edition of the joint military Exercise AUSTRAHIND kicked off today at the Foreign Training Node in Pune, Maharashtra. Scheduled to run from 8th to 21st November 2024, the exercise is part of an annual military collaboration between India and Australia, hosted alternately by the two nations. The previous edition was held in Australia in December 2023.
This year, India’s contribution to the exercise consists of 140 personnel, primarily from the DOGRA Regiment, along with 14 members of the Indian Air Force. Australia’s contingent includes 120 soldiers from the 13th Light Horse Regiment of the 10th Brigade, 2nd Division.
The main objective of Exercise AUSTRAHIND is to strengthen military cooperation and improve interoperability between Indian and Australian forces in executing joint operations. The focus will be on conducting counterterrorism missions in semi-urban settings and semi-desert terrains under the United Nations’ Chapter VII mandate. The drills emphasize joint planning, tactical maneuvers, and maintaining high levels of physical fitness.
The exercise is divided into two key phases. The first phase will focus on combat conditioning and tactical training, while the second phase will serve as a validation of the skills and strategies practiced. During the exercise, participants will rehearse responses to various scenarios, including counterterrorism actions involving the capture of specific areas, setting up Joint Operations Centers, conducting raids, search-and-destroy missions, and securing helipads. The use of drones and anti-drone tactics, along with Special Heli-borne Operations, will also be highlighted.
Exercise AUSTRAHIND provides a platform for both armies to exchange best practices in tactical operations, enhancing their techniques and procedures. Additionally, it fosters camaraderie and mutual understanding between the Indian and Australian military personnel.
