Indian Army’s Maratha Battalion Marks Maratha Day 2026 with Historic Re-enactments in Pune
Aundh, 4th February 2026: The Maratha Battalion at Aundh Military Station commemorated Maratha Day 2026 on 03 and 04 February through a series of meaningful and vibrant activities, honouring the unparalleled courage, supreme sacrifice and rich martial legacy of the Maratha warriors. The celebrations reflected the indomitable spirit that continues to inspire generations of soldiers and citizens alike.
Observed annually to commemorate the legendary victory of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s forces under the leadership of Veer Tanaji Malusare during the historic Battle of Sinhagad (1670), the occasion paid tribute to his supreme sacrifice while recapturing the fort. His immortal words, “Gad aala pan Sinha gela” (The fort is won, but the lion is lost), remain a timeless symbol of valour, leadership, patriotism and devotion to duty, deeply resonating within the ethos of the Indian Army, particularly the Maratha Light Infantry.
The programme featured a well-balanced blend of military, ceremonial, cultural and outreach activities aimed at fostering public awareness, participation and pride in the nation’s military heritage. Key highlights included the “Tanaji Run” from Pali to Durugdara, retracing the historic route undertaken by Veer Tanaji Malusare along with 300 Mavla warriors, and a cultural programme showcasing traditional Maharashtrian performances such as Powada, Gondhal martial arts demonstrations and Jhanj Pathak, reflecting the region’s vibrant cultural legacy. A re-enactment of the capture of Sinhagad was conducted on the intervening night of 03–04 February, followed by a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at the Tanaji Malusare Smarak and a weapon display as a mark of deep respect and remembrance.
The celebrations also witnessed the flagging off of the “Mountain to Ocean” Cycle Expedition from Sinhagad Fort to Sindhudurg Fort, promoting fitness, environmental awareness and patriotism. Interactions with veterans and Veer Naris strengthened the bond between serving soldiers and the extended military fraternity while acknowledging their invaluable contributions. Attended by senior serving officers, veterans and civil dignitaries, Maratha Day 2026 stood as a solemn yet inspiring reminder of India’s glorious past and reaffirmed the Indian Army’s steadfast commitment to preserving military heritage, fostering national pride and upholding the highest traditions of service to the nation.
