Indian Canadians Reflect on Trudeau’s Immigration Policies as He Steps Down

Washington, 7th January 2025: With Justin Trudeau stepping down as Prime Minister of Canada, the country’s political landscape is at a pivotal moment. His resignation brings an end to nearly a decade of leadership characterized by progressive immigration policies, global humanitarian efforts, and intense political scrutiny. The shift opens the door for Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, who is positioning himself as the next leader, with promises to revamp immigration policies and address various other national concerns.

For many Indian Canadians, Trudeau’s exit is a “bittersweet” moment, acknowledging that his immigration strategies played a role in the challenges that led to his departure.

“It’s like driving without the right fuel,” said Suraj Subhadarshee, a business and product strategy manager in Toronto. “His resignation is bittersweet, but some of his policies, especially regarding immigration and sanctions, contributed to this day.”

Another senior analyst at a tech firm stated, “The Indian Canadian community supports his resignation. Despite being liberal, his policies have failed to shield individuals and families from economic difficulties.”

Trudeau’s immigration agenda, aimed at welcoming over 500,000 permanent residents annually by 2025 to tackle labour shortages and rejuvenate Canada’s ageing population, has faced both praise and criticism. While supporters argue it was necessary, detractors claim that the rapid influx has strained housing, healthcare, and public services.

“Until recently, immigration was more controlled, but now the unchecked flow is causing disruption. A balanced approach is key for a country’s long-term success,” said Subhadarshee.

“Immigration is vital for Canada, especially with its crumbling infrastructure,” added another tech analyst.

Despite the current climate, some wish for an immediate halt to immigration. “Now that I’m in Canada, I hope they stop all immigration,” shared one individual.

The resignation raises concerns about the future of India-Canada relations, which have significantly deteriorated. Tensions escalated in September 2023 when Trudeau accused India of being involved in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a claim India strongly rejected. This controversy has placed additional pressure on Trudeau’s leadership.

“With a new government, there may be an opportunity to stabilize relations, starting with domestic reforms,” said Ruturaj Gaurav, a senior analyst in Canada.

Others believe that Pierre Poilievre could adopt a more balanced approach. Poilievre, a vocal critic of Trudeau’s immigration policies, argued in December 2024 that the current administration’s approach has “destroyed our system.” He proposed capping immigration based on the availability of housing, healthcare, and jobs, suggesting a more controlled approach.

“I met Mr. Poilievre in person and attended one of his meetings. He seems promising, and I believe it’s time to give the Conservatives a chance. Under his leadership, things might improve for Canada,” said Subhadarshee.

Trudeau’s immigration policies, which saw over 40,000 Syrian refugees resettled and over 200,000 Ukrainians granted temporary refuge, were core to his government’s humanitarian vision. However, many expect Poilievre to shift focus towards skilled immigration to address labour shortages while reducing family reunification or refugee quotas. His emphasis on deregulation and speeding up housing development could also address housing issues.

Despite these changes, opinions about Poilievre are divided.

“He’s not perfect, but what choice do we have?” said Gaurav.
