New Delhi, 10th February 2025: Despite the overwhelming rush of devotees at Mahakumbh, Indian Railways is operating at full capacity, ensuring smooth transportation for pilgrims. Addressing concerns over misleading media reports, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed that over 12.5 lakh passengers have been transported from eight railway stations in the Prayagraj region through 330 special and regular trains.
“Trains are running at an average interval of just over four minutes, ensuring that devotees don’t have to wait long after their holy bath,” Vaishnaw stated, emphasizing that Indian Railways is fully equipped to handle the ongoing surge in passengers.
Railway Board Chairman Reviews Ground Situation
Ahead of the upcoming Maghi Purnima Amrit Snan, Railway Board Chairman and CEO Satish Kumar held a review meeting with zonal and divisional railway officials. Stressing the efficiency of railway operations, Kumar highlighted that each train rake is carrying an average of 3,780 passengers per trip, showcasing the massive scale of transportation efforts.
“Prayagraj Junction, along with seven other key stations—Prayagraj Chheoki, Naini, Subedarganj, Prayag, Phaphamau, Prayagraj Rambagh, and Jhusi—are operating at full capacity. The closure of Prayagraj Sangam station for a limited period around Amrit Snan is a standard practice, implemented in coordination with local authorities,” Kumar clarified.
Indian Railways’ War Room Monitors Operations
Earlier in the day, Kumar briefed Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw from the Rail Bhawan war room, where live CCTV footage from all stations was being monitored. The two officials reviewed the on-ground situation, discussing strategies to manage the next surge of pilgrims.
“We urge the public and media to rely on official railway sources for updates instead of isolated reports suggesting disruptions at Prayagraj Junction,” Kumar said, reassuring that Mahakumbh special trains, marked with the event’s logo, are running seamlessly day and night.
Massive Train Operations Continue Uninterrupted
By 3 PM today, over 201 special and regular trains had already departed from Prayagraj region, transporting more than 9 lakh devotees. Kumar emphasized that Indian Railways’ ability to run 330 trains daily during Mahakumbh reflects its unwavering commitment to passenger convenience.
“During Mauni Amavasya, when the crowd was at its peak, we operated 360 trains in a single day. Our current operations are nearly matching that level, ensuring that every devotee reaches their destination smoothly,” Kumar added.
Authorities have advised passengers to follow official Indian Railways channels for accurate information and to avoid misleading reports about railway services at Mahakumbh.
