Indian To Begin Producing Semiconductors Soon: IT Secretary

New Delhi, 22nd February 2023: Alkesh Kumar Sharma, the secretary for electronics and information technology, announced on Tuesday (February 21), that the nation will soon begin producing semiconductors.

He was responding to a question regarding the Ministry of Electronics and IT’s action plan after state-owned Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL) brought up the issue of an electronic chip and printed circuit board (PCB or motherboard) scarcity impeding domestic production of electric meters.

Sharma said, “One of the top 6-7 partners with semiconductor production will be India. It will happen soon.”

While speaking at a conference on technology transfer by C-DAC, Thiruvananthapuram for local manufacturing of smart meters and electric chargers, Sharma claimed that Meity has grabbed the lead in technology development, whether it be in the electronic or automotive sectors, artificial intelligence.

He added, “When it comes to the effort to combat climate change, we have taken the lead. The transition to green technology is a major factor, and EVs is a crucial mission in that. The demand is rising. 5,000 chargers are currently required in the top 20 cities in India. ToT for EV will be extremely beneficial to the nation.”
