Indrayani River Clean-Up a Government Priority – Deputy CM Shinde

Reported by Varad Bhatkhande
Alandi, 9th May 2025: Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Thursday stated that making the Indrayani River pollution-free is a key priority for the state government, with the clean-up efforts being carried out on a “war footing.” He made these remarks while addressing the media during the 750th birth anniversary celebrations of Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj in Alandi.
Despite his assurances, local residents continue to raise concerns about the river’s deteriorating condition. They say pollution in the Indrayani remains a persistent issue, despite repeated claims by the government of active intervention.
“Making the Indrayani River clean and free of pollution is the wish of the warkaris,” said Shinde. “The Central and Maharashtra Governments are committed to the project. Work on the sewage treatment infrastructure has begun, and significant efforts will be required to restore the river. This responsibility lies entirely with the government, and whatever needs to be done will be done.”
He emphasized that the river clean-up would require public participation, adding that “lakhs of warkaris will lend their support.” Shinde assured that the clean-up project would formally commence this year, and reiterated the state’s commitment: “The Indrayani will be cleaned, purified, and made pollution-free. That is a guarantee.”
The Deputy CM also spoke about the government-backed Dnyanbhumi project spread over 450 acres in Alandi, noting that development would happen in phases. He said that Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis would be visiting on Friday to review progress.
“There are many projects planned here, from Bhakt Niwas to a virtual Wari experience. All efforts will be made to ensure comfort for devotees,” he added. Shinde claimed that the ruling Mahayuti government, which he said came to power with the blessings of the warkaris, would ensure all commitments are fulfilled.
“Current Work’s Receipt in Local Body Elections”
When asked whether the Mahayuti alliance will contest the upcoming independent local body elections in Maharashtra together, Eknath Shinde said, “Mahayuti will always remain united. It will win. It is currently in power in Maharashtra, has worked extensively for the people, and its efforts will be reflected in the results of the local body elections.”
