Innovative Step by PCMC: Native Tree Every 10 Metres to Make the City Greener

Pimpri, 2nd August 2025: Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has launched a unique initiative to plant native trees every 10 metres on both sides of major roads across the city. This ambitious tree plantation drive specifically targets stretches where greenery was previously lacking. The aim is to replicate the lush green road aesthetics seen in areas like Nigdi Pradhikaran throughout other parts of the city, including BRT corridors and other key urban stretches.

Priority is being given to roads where tree canopy is currently minimal. Trees are being planted on footpaths and adjacent open spaces at regular 10-metre intervals. The focus is on native species that are both ecologically beneficial and well-adapted to the city’s climate.

In addition to roadsides, PCMC will also carry out plantation in other public open spaces to increase the city’s overall green footprint. The campaign is being actively implemented by the Garden and Tree Conservation Department of PCMC.

Native Species Being Planted

Among the indigenous species planted under this initiative are: Neem, Tamhan, Kadamba, Banyan, Peepal, Akashneem, Bakul, Arjun, Mahogany, Sonchafa, and Parijat.

To ensure protection of these trees, PCMC is installing bamboo and iron tree guards, based on the location and need. Regular maintenance and monitoring arrangements are also in place to support tree survival and growth.
