Pune, 14th March 2025: H.V. Desai Eye Hospital, a leading eye care institution in Pune, recently organized a groundbreaking surgical skill transfer workshop for young ophthalmologists. Supported by the All India Ophthalmological Society (AIOS), the workshop aimed to train eye doctors in advanced cataract and other sub-specialty surgeries using the latest technology.

The day-long workshop featured 80 surgical sessions for 35 ophthalmologists from across Maharashtra, focusing on hands-on training in a wet lab environment.

“Workshops emphasizing practical learning in a wet lab setting are crucial for the next generation of eye surgeons,” said Dr. Rahul Deshpande, Chief Medical Director, and Dr. Kuldeep Dole, Director, H.V. Desai Eye Hospital.

One of the highlights of the workshop was the cutting-edge Virtual Reality (VR) model “Oculus,” which enables doctors to independently practice surgical steps. This realistic and immersive VR experience allows young ophthalmologists to repeatedly refine their cataract surgery skills, ultimately leading to better patient outcomes.

“This innovative technology is the first of its kind in Western India and is set to revolutionize the way eye surgeons are trained,” said Dr. Sucheta Kulkarni, Medical Director, H.V. Desai Eye Hospital.

The workshop was conducted under the guidance of the Maharashtra Ophthalmological Society and the Poona Ophthalmological Society.

“H.V. Desai Eye Hospital is equipped with a state-of-the-art wet lab for surgical training, providing invaluable hands-on experience to budding ophthalmologists,” said Dr. Ashwini Gaikwad, Senior Ophthalmologist.

By integrating the latest skills and technology into medical training, H.V. Desai Eye Hospital continues its commitment to delivering world-class eye care to the community, said Parvez Bilimoria, Executive Director, H.V. Desai Eye Hospital.
