“Is This an Ashram?” – Pune District Hospital Doctor’s Remark Sparks Outrage After Patient’s Death

Aundh, 18th March 2025: A troubling incident at Aundh District Hospital in Pune has raised serious concerns about the quality of patient care. Girish More, a 44-year-old resident of Yerawada, was discharged prematurely on January 10, despite his family’s repeated requests to extend his stay due to deteriorating health. Just three days later, on January 12, he passed away.
More had been admitted on January 3 for chronic alcoholism and type 2 diabetes. While his condition initially improved, on January 10, his blood sugar levels dropped to a critical 31, and he developed severe swelling in his legs, making it difficult for him to walk.
Despite these complications, doctors insisted on discharging him, with one allegedly remarking, “Is this an ashram?” when the family requested an extension of his treatment.
The family has recorded their interaction with hospital staff, capturing their distress and the doctor’s dismissive attitude. More lived alone, and his family strongly believes that had he received continued care, he might have survived. The incident has sparked public outrage, with relatives questioning whether the hospital prioritizes patient welfare.
District Civil Surgeon Dr. Nagnath Yempalle has assured that a thorough investigation will be conducted into the matter.
