GBS Outbreak in Pune Declared Over as No New Cases Reported Since February 18

Pune, 18th March 2025: The outbreak of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) in Pune, which emerged in the Sinhagad Road area on January 9, has officially ended, as confirmed by the Pune Municipal Corporation’s Health Department. No new cases have been reported in the affected area since February 18, prompting the department to notify the Public Health Department about the containment of the outbreak.
The highest number of GBS cases were reported in Nandedgaon, Sinhagad Road. The outbreak was linked to norovirus and Campylobacter jejuni infections. Generally, an outbreak is considered over when no new cases are reported for twice the incubation period of the disease.
Dr. Nina Borade, Health Chief of PMC, stated, “The incubation period for both norovirus and Campylobacter jejuni was 8 to 10 days. Since it has been 27 days without a new case, we have sent a letter to the Joint Director and Deputy Director of the Public Health Department to confirm the closure of the outbreak. Once approved, it will be officially declared over.”
So far, 230 GBS cases have been reported across Maharashtra, with Pune recording the highest numbers:
46 cases in Pune Municipal Corporation limits
95 cases in newly incorporated villages within the PMC
34 cases in Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation
40 cases in Pune Rural
15 cases in other districts
A total of 12 deaths have been reported, including 10 in Pune, one in Pimpri-Chinchwad, and the first fatality in Solapur, where the patient had traveled from Pune.
Current Status of GBS Cases in Maharashtra
