Junnar’s Nikhil Kokate Becomes First Tribal Mountaineer from Pune to Summit Kilimanjaro

Pune, 21st March 2025: In a historic feat, Nikhil Kisan Kokate, a resident of Taleran village in Junnar, Pune district, has successfully summited Mount Kilimanjaro (5,895 meters), Africa’s highest peak, on February 22, 2025. With this achievement, he has become the first tribal person from Pune district and the first individual from Junnar tehsil to reach the summit of Kilimanjaro.

An experienced trek leader and mountaineer, Nikhil’s Kilimanjaro expedition marks the beginning of his Seven Summits Challenge—an elite mountaineering goal of climbing the highest peaks on all seven continents. His accomplishment is not just a personal milestone but a symbol of resilience and inspiration for tribal youth across Maharashtra.

“This climb was not just about reaching the summit; it was about setting an example for my community and proving that tribal youth can dream big and achieve extraordinary milestones,” Nikhil shared after his return.

The journey to Kilimanjaro’s summit was far from easy. Extreme altitudes, unpredictable weather, and oxygen deprivation posed significant challenges. However, months of intense physical training, mental conditioning, and unwavering perseverance helped Nikhil achieve his goal.

His expedition was supported by the Maharashtra Tribal Development Department, recognizing the need to promote adventure sports among tribal communities and encourage young talents like Nikhil to break barriers.

For Nikhil, this achievement is more than just a mountaineering record—it’s a step toward empowering tribal youth to pursue careers in adventure sports. He hopes to bring greater recognition and support to mountaineering and inspire aspiring adventurers from marginalized communities to take up the sport.

With Kilimanjaro conquered, Nikhil now sets his sights on Mount Elbrus (Russia) and Aconcagua (South America)—his next milestones in the Seven Summits Challenge.

Nikhil’s record-breaking ascent has caught the attention of mountaineering organizations and adventure sports communities. His feat is currently under review for inclusion in prestigious record books, further cementing his legacy as a pioneer in the tribal community.
