Pune, 15th December 2025: Koregaon Park police have arrested a 21-year-old housekeeping firm employee from Belagavi for allegedly driving a Class X student to suicide through sustained harassment and extortion. The accused has been identified as Anil Shivappa Majare.

According to police, Majare allegedly repeatedly contacted the 16-year-old girl and her family, demanding money and threatening to circulate her photographs on social media platforms. Investigators said the accused had sought ₹50,000 and continued to pressure the family even after receiving a smaller amount.

Senior Police Inspector Sangita Jadhav of Koregaon Park police said the accused’s mobile phone has been seized for further examination. “We have recovered images from his phone and sent the device for detailed digital forensic analysis. His social media activity is also being verified,” she said.

The incident came to light on November 23, when the girl was found hanging from a ceiling fan at her residence in Koregaon Park while other family members were away. Her father and brother are employed with a private firm, while her mother works as a domestic help. Following the incident, the mother approached the police and lodged a complaint, naming Majare and accusing him of abetting her daughter’s suicide.

Police said preliminary findings indicate that the accused had already taken ₹8,000 from the girl but continued to demand more money. “Our investigation shows that he was persistently asking for amounts ranging between ₹40,000 and ₹50,000 from the victim’s mother and brother,” Jadhav said.

Investigators further revealed that the girl and her mother had travelled to Belagavi a few months earlier to attend a family function, where Majare allegedly noticed the girl and later traced her details. Police said he sent her a friend request on social media, which she accepted, after which they began communicating.

“During these interactions, he allegedly pressured her into sharing photographs. We believe some of the images may have been altered,” Jadhav said. She added that call detail records played a key role in identifying the accused. “The phone number used to contact the victim repeatedly helped us trace Majare,” she said.

The accused has been arrested and further investigation is underway to determine the full extent of the harassment and the digital evidence involved.
