Kothrud: Two brothers booked for harassing and blackmailing a woman with a selfie for money

Pune, August 27, 2020: A 25-year-old woman working as a software engineer with an IT company from Kothrud has filed a complaint against two brothers for allegedly harassing and blackmailing her. The two accused are Vaibhav Dilip Katore and Roshan Dilip Katore. The duo have been blackmailing her since May 2013 till August 19, 2020. They have been booked for extortion, harassment and making threats.

According to police officials, the woman and the accused both are from Nashik and met each other in a coaching institute in Nashik in 2011. After completing her education, the woman moved to Pune in search for a job and so did Vaibhav after a few days along with his brother. Later, they got in touch and became friends.

After some time, Vaibhav proposed marriage to the woman but she refused. Vaibhav then started pressuring her to accept his proposal and calling her ceaselessly. The woman even accused him of sexually harassing her. In one incident, he even turned up at her office claiming that he was her husband.

When the woman’s family tried to arrange her marriage, Vaibhav started threatening her by saying that he will make their selfie which they took when they were friends go viral on social media. He even extorted Rs 7,500 from her and stopped her marriage from happening elsewhere. The brother, Roshan also forced her to come to a mobile shop and buy him a smartphone worth Rs 14,000.

The accused has been booked for offences under sections 354 (A) (sexual harassment), 354 (D) (stalking), 384 (extortion), 506/2 (criminal intimidation), 385 (putting person in fear of any injury in order to commit extortion), 34 (criminal act done by several persons for common intention) and 509 (outraging the modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
