Punekar News's photo.Pune : A 20-year-old youth has been nabbed for allegedly brutally killing senior citizen Satishchandra Gopalrao Dravid (86) at his flat in Lunkad Velencia building in Viman Nagar, Pune, on September 17.

Dravid stayed with his wife, daughter and granddaughter, who had gone to Kothrud for Ganesh festival celebration. The domestic help had also left around noon.

He was alone when Rahul Juggulal Vishwakarma (20), who works at a laundry near Ganpati chowk in Viman Nagar, came to his third-floor flat around 4 pm.

Police officials said that Vishwakarma’s security guard friend at the building didn’t note down his details in the visitor’s register. The guard has been detained.

According to police, as soon as Dravid opened the door Vishwakarma pushed him down and hit him on head with an iron chair. Later he assaulted him with a knife and decamped with valuables worth Rs 1.3 lakhs including some ornaments. Meanwhile Dravid’s family members called him on phone several times and when they didn’t receive any response, they reached the flat around 8 pm. When they opened the flat with a spare key, Dravid was found in a pool of blood. They informed the police.

Several crime branch teams including those from local crime branch unit 5, property cell, homicide squad, anti-organised crime cell (north region) and anti-dacoity cell, were brought in to nab the killer.

Police questioned about 150 persons, including delivery boys, electricians, plumbers, newspaper vendors and domestic helps,
who visited the building that day because their names figured in the visitor’s register and their images were captured by the CCTV cameras installed in the main gate of the society.

A police team led by senior police inspector (Unit 5) Sunil Yadav found Vishwakarma interacting with the guard while analysing the CCTV footage, but his name did not figure in the register. When asked to explain why Vishwakarma’s name was not entered, the failed to give satisfactory answer.

The breakthrough in the case came after the guard broke down during sustained interrogation and informed whereabouts of Vishwakarma.

Assistant police inspector Mahadev Waghmode and police naik Pramod Ghadge received information that Vishwakarma’s behaviour was suspicious after he had walked out of the building.
A police team visited the laundry where Vishwakarma was working, but he fled. After a brief chase, he was nabbed near Yamunanagar slums in Viman Nagar.

“The victim’s blood stains were found on his trouser. Also the footprints in the flat matched with his footwear,” Inspector Yadav said.

Vishwakarma hails from Makhaupur village in Allahabad district of Uttar Pradesh and worked here for the last five years.

In his defence Vishwakarma told police that the elderly man had abused and pushed him, when he had gone to collect clothes. Vishwakarma then pushed him and murdered him.

Investigation team included DCP (crime branch) P R Patil, ACP (crime 1) Rajendra Joshi, PSI Aqil Shaikh, head constable Ashok Atole, Shivaji Ghule, Manoj Salunkhe, Pradeep Surve, and Police Naik Bharat Ransing, Amzad Pathan, Sachin Gholap, Pravin Shinde and Ajay Kharade.
