People are aware about using clay idols and paper mash idols as a replacement for Plaster of Paris (POP) idols. There are other factors like the decorative materials etc that contribute to the pollution.
Earlier family members used to gather together for making the decorations but as days passed by people are opting for the readymade items available in the market.
These items are mainly made out of thermacol and plastic which cause a lot of environmental issues.

Punekar News's photo.Hence, Shashwat Foundation has used corrugated sheets and cardboard for making decorative items in Ganesh festivals. This activity has supported income for self-help groups from Kothrud (Swanand and Sanskruti), Wagholi (Maher NGO). Paper bags so as to collect ‘Nairmalya’ are provided along with the decorative items.

Kids from 15 schools were given awareness programs about celebrating eco-friendly Ganesh festival, noise pollution etc. Competitions for making eco-friendly decorative items are arranged in 12 schools while 3 prizes per schools will be distributed. These items will be given to the kids itself.

Shashwat foundation along with Cummins has placed stalls of the eco-friendly decorative items in various places around Pune which are sold for a reasonable rate.
