New Delhi, 9th May 2025: In a strong advisory issued amid heightened security operations, the Ministry of Defence has cautioned media channels, digital platforms, and individuals against live coverage or real-time reporting of defence movements and counter-terror operations. The ministry warned that premature or source-based disclosures could compromise operational effectiveness and endanger lives.

“All media channels, digital platforms, and individuals are advised to refrain from live coverage or real-time reporting of defence operations and movement of security forces,” the ministry stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter). It added that such reporting could prove detrimental in sensitive situations.

Citing historical precedents such as the Kargil War, the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, and the Kandahar hijacking, the ministry stressed that real-time broadcast of security operations has, in the past, risked the success of missions and endangered personnel.

The advisory reminded stakeholders of Clause 6(1)(p) of the Cable Television Networks (Amendment) Rules, 2021, which explicitly restricts real-time reporting during anti-terror or defence operations. The clause allows only periodic briefings by designated government officials during such events.

“Disclosure of such sensitive or source-based information may jeopardize operational effectiveness and endanger lives,” the ministry added, urging the media to maintain restraint and uphold journalistic responsibility.

“All stakeholders are urged to exercise vigilance, sensitivity, and responsibility in coverage, upholding the highest standards in the service of the nation,” the statement concluded.

The advisory comes amid a sensitive national security environment, with the government stepping up counter-terror and strategic operations in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK).
