Delhi 7th August 2023: Lok Sabha Secretariat today restored the membership of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi following the supreme court staying his conviction in a criminal defamation case over his remark against Modi. An official notification in this regard was issued earlier today.

It may be noted that Rahul Gandhi’s membership with Lok Sabha from Wayanad constituency of Kerala was cancelled following his conviction by the court in a criminal defamation case over his remark against Modi.

Rahul Gandhi during a political rally in 2019 had said “Why all thieves share the Modi surname” following which an MLA from Gujarat Purnesh Modi had filed a criminal defamation case against him accusing him of defaming everyone with ‘Modi’ surname. A local court in Surat had convicted him and sentenced him to two years of imprisonment in March this year due to which his membership with Lok Sabha was cancelled.

The Gujarat High Court has also refused to stay the conviction after which Rahul Gandhi approached Supreme Court. The SC ordered stay on the local court order and stayed his conviction on August 4.
