Lonavala, 25th January 2026: Heavy congestion crippled the Mumbai–Pune Expressway on Sunday morning as thousands of vehicles poured onto the road during the long weekend rush. The sudden spike in tourist traffic toward Pune, Lonavala, and nearby hill stations led to bumper-to-bumper movement across multiple sections. Similar gridlock was reported on Saturday as well.

Police and highway authorities said traffic slowed to a crawl at several choke points, especially near toll plazas and ghat stretches. In some areas, motorists were stuck for long periods, significantly delaying travel time between Mumbai and Pune. Traffic control teams and emergency units were deployed along the route to regulate movement and assist stranded commuters.

Officials appealed to the public to avoid unnecessary travel on the expressway until conditions ease. Those who must travel were asked to check live traffic updates and allow extra time for the journey.
As an alternative, drivers were advised to consider the old Mumbai–Pune highway, where traffic pressure is relatively lower. However, authorities cautioned that the old route has narrower lanes and more local traffic, requiring extra care.

Tourists and weekend travelers were urged to defer trips if possible to reduce congestion. Daily commuters were advised to leave early, maintain lane discipline, and follow instructions from traffic personnel.

The situation is under continuous monitoring, and traffic flow is expected to improve later in the day. Motorists have been asked to stay patient and prioritize safety while navigating the busy corridor.
