Mahad Building Collapse: 3 Teams of Pune-based NDRF rushed to spot

Mahad/Pune, August 24, 2020: Around 50 people are feared to have been trapped under the debris of a five-storey building which collapsed in Mahad, Raigad district, today. The incident took place around 6.50 pm today in Kajalpura locality. Till now, 25 people have been rescued.

As soon as the information of this incident was received, four teams of fire brigade rushed to the spot and started the work of removing the debris. Locals also rushed to the spot and started the relief work. However, since it was getting dark, the relief work was hampered.

Now, three teams of the 5th Battalion of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) based in Sudumbare in Maval taluka of Pune district have been rushed to the spot with specialised equipment. Green corridor has been created so that the teams reach the spot as soon as possible.

According to officials, the ground plus four floors of the building called Tariq Garden suddenly collapsed. The sound of the building collapsing saved the lives of around 10 to 15 people in the building who fled their houses before the collapse. At first, people in the area were shocked by the loud noise. Citizens then rushed towards the sound due to heavy smoke. At that moment, they saw the building collapse and a huge pile of debris, mud and furniture. Locals rushed to the spot and tried to evacuate those trapped under the mound.

Meanwhile, four teams of fire brigade and rescue squad rushed to the spot and started the rescue operation. So far, 25 people have been evacuated from the area and admitted to hospitals for treatment. A total of 200 to 225 people and 48 families lived in the building. It is feared that more than 150 people are trapped under the debris of the building. This building was built 10 years ago.
