Maharashtra Extends HSRP Deadline For Vehicles Till April 30; 25 Lakh Vehicle Owners To Update Number Plate In Pune Alone

Pune, 17th February 2025: The Maharashtra State Transport Department has extended the deadline for installing High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) by one month, pushing the last date to 30th April 2025. The decision comes in response to the large number of vehicles yet to comply with the mandate.
As per the Supreme Court’s directive, HSRP installation is mandatory for all vehicles manufactured before 2019. In Pune alone, over 25 lakh vehicles need to be fitted with the new number plates. Despite the requirement, the response from vehicle owners has been sluggish, with only 15,000 to 16,000 applications submitted so far. Of these, only around 7,000 to 8,000 vehicles have received the updated plates.
Given the slow progress, there was a demand for an extension, prompting the Transport Department to push the deadline. All Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) across the state have been instructed to ensure smooth implementation of the revised deadline.
To streamline the process, the Transport Department has divided RTOs into three zones to expedite HSRP installation. Pune RTO falls under Zone One, which consists of 12 RTOs, while Zone Two and Zone Three include 18 and 27 RTOs, respectively. Officials believe this zoning strategy will accelerate the installation process.
