Maharashtra Government Approves AI-Based Agri Policy; Rs 500 Crore Allocated for Implementation
Pune, 25th June 2025: In a bid to enhance agricultural productivity at reduced costs, the Maharashtra government has approved the “Maharashtra Agricultural Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy”. The policy aims to implement AI-based solutions over the next four years, with a ₹500 crore budget allocated for the first two years.
The initiative responds to numerous challenges faced by the agricultural sector, including climate change, unpredictable rainfall, rising temperatures, pest infestations, diseases, and a lack of assured pricing for produce. Declining soil organic carbon and increased instances of droughts and natural disasters have further compounded the difficulties for farmers.
To address these issues, the Department of Agriculture will utilize artificial intelligence to deliver data-driven, technology-backed farming solutions. These include reducing input costs and boosting productivity, as well as personalized advisories to farmers in Marathi.
Key Highlights:
A dedicated AgriTech Centre will be established to oversee the implementation of the AI policy. This body, chaired by the Principal Secretary (Agriculture), will work with national and international partners, encourage innovation, and facilitate project selection and funding.
Four agricultural universities in the state will host AI innovation and research centers to drive breakthroughs in agri-technology.
Farmers will receive personalized guidance in Marathi on crop production, pest and disease management, weather forecasts, market rates, and government schemes.
Field extension officers will be trained to use AI tools to provide on-ground support to farmers.
