Pune: Unauthorized Child Care Homes Under Scrutiny; Citizens Urged to Report Violations
Pune, 26th June 2025: In light of recent revelations involving unauthorized child care institutions in Pune and Thane districts, the Women and Child Development Department has urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any such illegal operations in their localities.
Manisha Biraris, District Women and Child Development Officer, issued a public appeal on Wednesday, encouraging residents to immediately inform the department or call the toll-free Child Helpline number 1098 if they come across unregistered children’s homes, hostels, or orphanages. The appeal follows disturbing incidents reported from Alandi in Pune district and Khadavli in Thane district, where children housed in unauthorized institutions were reportedly subjected to physical, mental, and sexual abuse.
“These unauthorized institutions not only violate the rights of children but also contravene provisions of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, its 2021 amendment, and the Maharashtra State Juvenile Justice Rules, 2018,” said Biraris.
She added that running a child care institution without proper registration is a punishable offense under the law. “Anyone found operating such facilities without official recognition faces up to one year of imprisonment and a fine of ₹1 lakh or more,” she warned.
The department has appealed to the public to help prevent crimes against children by remaining alert and reporting any suspicious activity related to child welfare institutions.
