Pune, 12th June 2021: A day after Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) issued a circular to charge Rs 1000 per month from morning and evening walkers on the campus, the state government has ordered the varsity to suspend the plan.

Higher Education Minister Uday Samant tweeted, “Savitribai Phule Pune University had decided to charge the general public for morning and evening walks under the ‘SPPU Oxy Park’ scheme. The administration has been instructed to restructure the scheme by postponing this decision and a revised circular will be issued soon.”

As per a circular issued by SPPU Registrar Dr Praffula Pawar on Friday, the new scheme was to come into effect from June 21 (Yoga Day) when the university will launch its ‘SPPU Oxy Park’ initiative.

The charges, including GST, were planned as follows:

One Month – Rs 1,000

Six Months – Rs 5,500

One Year – Rs 10,000

Many student organisations had opposed the scheme. “The SPPU administration should not change the character of the university. They are doing all things which a university should not do”, Yukrand’s vice president Kamlakar Shete said.
