Pune, 30th March 2023: Maharashtra state government of Pune has requested feedback from the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) regarding the merger of Pune and Khadki cantonments under municipal limits. This is part of the Union government’s plan to merge cantonments with nearby municipal corporations.

Prashant Waghmare, the city engineer, stated that they will submit their feedback after consulting with the municipal commissioner and other senior officials.

Pune district has three cantonments, including Pune, Khadki, and Dehu Road. The state government has also asked for the opinion of Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) regarding the merger of Dehu Road cantonment with the civic body. Additionally, the state has requested feedback from Ahmednagar, Nagpur, and Nashik municipal corporations regarding the merger of cantonments with nearby jurisdictions.

A senior official stated that PMC would likely be in favor of the merger since they are already providing water and undertaking road repair works in these areas. Merging the cantonment areas with PMC would benefit residents in terms of obtaining various permits and infrastructure projects. Additionally, the entry tax would be eliminated.
