Maharashtra Introduces Military Training from Class 1 to Build Discipline and Patriotism

Mumbai, 4th June — In a bold step to instill patriotism, discipline, and physical fitness from an early age, the Maharashtra government will introduce basic military training for students starting from Class 1. The initiative, announced by School Education Minister Dada Bhuse, will be implemented in collaboration with retired armed forces personnel, NCC officers, Scouts and Guides, and school sports teachers.
“Children will be taught the value of national pride, regular exercise, and a disciplined lifestyle through this training,” said Minister Bhuse. The plan has the backing of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, with the state preparing to mobilize over 2.5 lakh ex-servicemen for implementation across schools.
National Security Context
The move comes amid heightened national security awareness following a spate of recent events:
The Pahalgam terror attack on April 22 claimed the lives of Indian soldiers.
India’s retaliatory ‘Operation Sindoor’ on May 7, targeting terror camps across the LoC in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
Civil defence exercises like ‘Operation Abhyas’ (May 7) and ‘Operation Shield’ (May 31), which were held in multiple border states to strengthen civilian preparedness.
A Broader Vision for Youth Development
Officials say the military training initiative is part of a broader vision to build resilient, confident, and physically active youth who are better prepared to contribute to national service, whether through the armed forces or civic life.
Training modules will be age-appropriate, starting with basic physical routines, drills, and group discipline in lower grades, gradually progressing to structured activities similar to those offered by the NCC in higher classes.
This program also aligns with the national emphasis on grassroots defence preparedness and will make Maharashtra one of the first states to institutionalize early military training as part of the school curriculum.
