Maharashtra: MBBS Student Gang-Raped After Spiking Her Drink; Three Arrested

Sangli, 23rd May 2025: In a disturbing incident reported from Sangli, three young men have been arrested for allegedly gang-raping a 22-year-old medical student after lacing her drink with a sedative. The accused include two of the survivor’s classmates and their friend, according to Vishrambag police.
The alleged crime occurred on the night of May 18 at a rented flat in Wanlesswadi, where one of the accused had taken the woman under the pretext of stopping briefly before heading to a movie theatre. In her complaint, the third-year MBBS student stated that the men gave her a drink spiked with sedatives, after which she felt disoriented and was sexually assaulted.
All three accused, aged between 20 and 22, were taken into custody late Tuesday after the woman, a native of Karnataka, reported the incident with the support of her parents.
“They consumed alcohol and offered her a drink. Once she started feeling dizzy, the assault took place,” a police official said, citing the First Information Report (FIR).
Vishrambag Police Inspector Sudhir Bhalerao said, “We acted immediately upon receiving the complaint and arrested all three accused. A medical examination of the survivor was conducted, and we are awaiting the report. The suspects have been remanded to police custody until May 27 for further investigation.”
The case has been registered under Section 70(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which pertains to gang rape committed with common intention. If convicted, the accused face a minimum of 20 years in prison.
Inspector Bhalerao added, “We are closely examining all angles and ensuring the survivor receives the necessary support. The investigation is being conducted with urgency and sensitivity.”
The incident has shocked the local community, with student groups and civil society organizations calling for swift justice and better safeguards for women, particularly students living away from home.
