Maharashtra State Safai Karmachari Commission Urges Pune Municipal Corporation to Resolve Sanitation Workers’ Issues Immediately

Pune, 19th May 2025: The Maharashtra State Commission for Safai Karmacharis has directed the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to urgently address the pressing issues faced by its sanitation and contract workers. Commission Chairman Sher Singh Dagor issued these instructions to the civic administration, highlighting that sanitation workers have yet to receive the Seventh Pay Commission arrears, and those in newly merged villages are still denied the ‘dirt allowance.’
Additionally, the commission noted that contract workers often do not receive timely salaries and lack transparency regarding their provident fund details. These concerns were discussed in a meeting held at the PMC Building on Monday, attended by Commissioner Dr. Rajendra Bhosale, Additional Commissioner Prithviraj B.P., Solid Waste Management Officer Sandeep Kadam, other department heads, and union representatives. During the session, workers voiced their grievances and demands directly to the commission.
Key demands included the distribution of accident insurance cards, implementation of a contributory medical scheme for employees who joined after 2005, reinstatement of the Labour Success Scheme discontinued in 2012, revival of the Maharshi Valmiki Award, and information on jetting machine tenders. There were also calls to resolve pension and compassionate appointment cases for retired workers.
Chairman Dagor emphasized that the government must take these demands seriously and act promptly. In response, Commissioner Dr. Rajendra Bhosale assured that the administration would make every effort to resolve as many pending issues as possible.
