Sangli, 23rd June 2025: A high school physical education teacher from Nelkaranji village in Atpadi tehsil of Sangli district has been arrested for allegedly fatally assaulting his teenage daughter after she failed a college exam.

The accused, 48-year-old Dhondiram Bhosale, was taken into custody on Sunday following a complaint filed by his wife. The complaint alleges that Bhosale struck their 17-year-old daughter with a wooden stick at their home on Friday night, leading to critical injuries.

“She had reportedly failed a recent examination, which enraged her father. He beat her severely that night. She was later taken to a hospital but succumbed to her injuries,” said a police officer at Atpadi police station.

The police have registered a case under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 75 of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015. Bhosale was produced in a local court on Sunday and has been remanded in police custody until June 23 for further investigation.

Inspector Vinay Bahir, who is leading the investigation, confirmed that a postmortem examination pointed to serious physical trauma as the cause of death. “The evidence shows the girl was beaten badly. We are verifying all aspects of the incident,” he said.

Senior officers from Sangli district police also visited the scene as part of the investigation. According to neighbors, the family includes an elder son and a younger daughter.

Police officials said they are currently focusing on the mother’s statement while also examining whether there were any additional factors that may have led to the assault. “We are treating this as a serious domestic violence case with fatal consequences,” said a senior official.
