Pune, 19th July 2024: Starting Friday, the Pune Expressway will introduce an AI-powered Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS), the first of its kind in Maharashtra. This innovative system leverages artificial intelligence and data analytics to improve vehicle flow and enhance road safety. The technology allows for the automatic detection of various traffic violations, promising a more efficient driving experience for commuters.

The Regional Transport Office (RTO) will monitor the system from a control room in Lonavala. A key feature of the ITMS is its ability to automatically recognize vehicle number plates, enabling police to issue e-challans for traffic violations. This automation aims to deter violators and ensure quick enforcement of traffic regulations. The system will also reduce prolonged traffic congestion caused by disabled vehicles by promptly identifying and reporting such incidents to the control room. Currently, response times to these situations can exceed an hour, causing significant delays and inconvenience for motorists.

The Mumbai-Pune Expressway, a crucial transportation route, handles an average daily traffic volume of up to 40,000 vehicles, increasing to 60,000 on weekends. To effectively manage this heavy traffic flow, the ITMS will deploy over 200 AI-enabled CCTV cameras mounted on gantries along the 95-kilometer stretch of the expressway. These advanced cameras can detect up to 17 different types of traffic violations, ensuring comprehensive surveillance and enforcement.
