Indore, December 6, 2018: Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. in association with SAEINDIA, a
professional Society of Automotive Engineers, announced the commencement of the 12 th edition
of the much-awaited BAJA series. The finale will be held at the NATRIP facility at Pithampur
near Indore, from 24 th to 27 th January, 2019 followed by IIT Ropar near Chandigarh from 8 th to
10 th March 2019.

363 entries were received for BAJA SAEINDIA 2019, out of which 201 teams are shortlisted for
conventional m-BAJA & 50 teams are shortlisted for e-BAJA from the virtual round.
BAJA SAEINDIA tasks the students to conceptualize design, build, test & validate a single-
seater four wheeled All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) to take part in series of events spread across a
course of 4 days. The event will include Technical Inspection, Static Evaluation such as Design,
Cost & Sales Presentation and Dynamic Events such as Acceleration, Sledge Pull,
Maneuverability. Suspension & Traction followed by an Endurance Event of 4 hours.
A remarkable feature unique to BAJA SAEINDIA is the adoption of a new theme every year.
This year, the theme for BAJA 2019 is ‘Adventure Reloaded’, which celebrates the passion,
hard work and perseverance of the budding engineers and the fervour to take up challenges
and ability to maximize efforts.

BAJA SAEINDIA also initiated the eBAJA series in 2015, to leverage the onset of Electric
Mobility in India. The conventional BAJA vehicles run on 10 HP Briggs & Stratton gasoline
engine, common for all 201 mBAJA teams, whereas eBAJA vehicles will run on electric motor
with 6 kW peak electric power and powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack. Here,
the students are free to source the motor, controller & battery and design their own Battery
Management System. This year, we have encouraged more students from Electrical &
Electronic engineering field to participate in the event, considering the requirement of Human
Resource for Electric Vehicles.

For BAJA 2019, 10 colleges from Madhya Pradesh have qualified for the finale at Pithampur
In the first part of BAJA 2018, which was held at Pithampur, Indore, the coveted title was won by
Smt. Kashibai Navale College of Engineering, Pune for eBAJA, followed by D.Y. Patil
College of Engineering and College Of Engineering, Pune who were declared the Joint
winners of mBAJA. Govt. College of Engineering College, Coimbatore were declared the
winners in the second part of BAJA 2018 which was held at IIT Ropar, Punjab from 8 th to 11 th
March 2018.

For the BAJA finale, entries from engineering colleges from across the country were screened
at the Virtual Round held at Chitkara University, Punjab in July 2018, where they presented their
Designs for the BAJA Buggy vehicle that they wished to design for the final event.
The qualifying teams were selected through a thorough analysis on their CAD Designs, CAE
analysis and the designs of Roll Cage, Suspension, Steering & Brakes along with their Rule
book VIVA sessions and evaluation on extempore topics given to them. The entries presented
at the virtual BAJA were mock-ups that would be created with exact specifications by the
participants. The teams in the final round would showcase their skills, understanding and
passion for automobiles while having manufactured their own buggy race car.
Speaking on the occasion Dr. Bala Bharadvaj, President, SAEINDIA said, “At SAEINDIA, we
have been championing the cause of BAJA SAEINDIA since its inception in 2007. Over the
years, we have successfully created excitement about automotive engineering in engineering
colleges. In fact, as an organization, we are dedicated towards instilling passion for automotive
engineering and what better platform to do it than BAJA SAEINDIA.”
