Shadja & Antaranga to take place between 12th to 14th December

Pune, December 6, 2018 : ‘Shadja’ & ‘Antaranga’, two special programs that have been a part of ‘Sawai Gandharva Bhimsen Mahotsav’ since past 11 years, shall be organized this year between Wednesday, December 12 to Friday, December 14. Both the events – ‘Shadja’ & ‘Antaranga’ will take place at ‘Sawai Gandharva Smarak’ on Ganeshkhind road near Rahul Theatre in Shivajinagar between 10.00am and 12.00pm. Entry to both these programs will be free on first come first serve basis. Some seats will be reserved for invitees.

Details of ‘Shadja’ & ‘Antaranga’ and other initiatives of this year’s ‘Sawai Gandharva Bhimsen Mahotsav’ were announced by Shrinivas Joshi, Executive President, Arya Sangeet Prasarak Mandal during a Press Conference held in city today. Siddharth Shirole, Director, PMPML &  Sateesh Paknikar, renowned photographer were also present on the occasion.

‘Saath Sangat’- A photo exhibition :
Photo exhibition on various themes and various artists by Pune’s renowned photographer Sateesh Paknikar is always one of the major attractions at the Sawai Festival. This is the 12th year of this exibition, which is titled as ‘Saath Sangat’. As the name suggests, this exhibition will feature the artists playing musical instruments with highest skill to accompany the main vocalist or other instrument player. This accompaniment known as ‘Saath Sangat’ in Marathi adds great value to the musical performance and takes it to the supreme level. Instruments like Sarangi, Harmonium, Tabla, Pakhawaj, Ghatam, Violin, Organ, Mrudangam, Taal (टाळ) are a few to name. In this black and white photo exhibition, music lovers will get to see Ustaad Allarakha, Pt. Kishan Maharaj, Pt. Samtaprasad, Ustaad  Zakir Husain, Pt. Anindo Chatterjee, Pt. Kumar Bose, Pt. Appa Jalgaonkar, Pt. Tulshidas Borkar, Pt. Shankarbapu Apegaonkar, Ustaad Sabir Khan, Ustaad Sarvar Husain and many more artists accompanying the main performance. The exhibition will showcase over 90 photos by Sateesh Paknikar. The exhibition can be seen at the venue of the festival during the festival days. It be inaugurated in presence of Mauli Takalkar, Taal (टाळ) player, Pt. Arvind Thatte, Harmonium, Pt. Vijay Ghate, Tabla player and Shriniwas Joshi.

Special programs ‘Shadja’ and ‘Antaranga’-
Day 1 – Wednesday, December 12
On the first day of ‘Shadja’ two documentaries will be shown, which includes a documentary- ‘Pt. Vishnu Digambar Paluskar’ directed by S. B. Nayampalli, followed by another documentary ‘Pt.Birju Maharaj’ directed by Chidanand Dasgupta.
In the second half of the program- ‘Antaranga’, music lovers will get an opportunity to witness a conversation with Pt. Basant Kabra, one of the eldest disciple of late Sitar player and musician Annapurna Devi. Mangesh Waghmare will interview him.

Day 2 – Thursday, December 13
As a part of ‘Shadja’, a documentary ‘Girija Devi’ directed by Bijoy Chatterjee will be shown.
On this day, in ‘Antaranga’, the audience will get to witness an interview with veteran Tabla player Pt. Suresh Talwalkar. Keshav Paranjape will interview him.

Day 3 – Friday, December 14
In ‘Shadja’, a documentary ‘Jamuna ke teer- Abdul Karim Khan’ will be featured. In ‘Antaranga’, Aarti Ankalikar-Tikekar, renowned vocalist will be in conversation with another renowned vocalist Devki Pandit.

‘Vatsalabaai Joshi Award’ to noted vocalist Pt. Ulhas Kashalkar –

Each year ‘Vatsalabai Joshi Award’ is given to an artist for his/her precious contribution towards Indian Classical Music. This is the 14th year of this award and it has been announced to veteran vocalist Pt. Ulhas Kashalkar. The award will be in the form of cash prize of Rs.51,000/-,a citation and a memento.Pt. Ulhas Kashalkar is son of N. D. Kashalkar and disciple of Pt. Gajananbuwa Joshi and Pt. Ram Marathe, is known for his unique style of blending together the charactoristics of Gwalior, Agra and Jaipur Gharana with authenticity and aesthetic excellence.

PMPML Special Bus Service


‘This year, the festival is entering a new venue and just like last year, PMPML is going to offer special bus services for the convenience of music lovers,’ announced Siddharth Shirole.

The routes decided are as follows-

1) Kothrud Depot (Paud Road) to Maharashtriya Mandal Krida Sankul, Mukundnagar and after the event back to Kothrud depot (Paud Road)
2) Warje Malwadi to Maharashtriya Mandal Krida Sankul, Mukundnagar and after the event back to Warje Malwadi.
3) Sinhgad Road (Dhayri) to Maharashtriya Mandal Krida Sankul, Mukundnagar and after the event back to Sinhgad Road (Dhayri)
4) Pimpri-Chinchwad (Bhakti-Shakti Chawk, Nigdi) to Maharashtriya Mandal Krida Sankul, Mukundnagar and after the event back to Pimpri-Chinchwad (Bhakti Shakti Chawk, Nigdi)

These buses will start from their first stop at around 1 hour prior to the timings of festival each day. In addition to this, Ola and Uber apps will show the destination of ‘Sawai 2018’ during the festival period, so that it will be easy for people to get to the venue from anywhere easily.
