Pune, 11th August 2021: The Bombay High Court on Tuesday ordered that the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Ltd which is the agency implementing the Pune Metro Project is free to demolish structures at the site of any proposed station, in adherence to the due process of law, after 30th August 2021.

The agency had previously filed a case in the High Court seeking permission to demolish slum dwellings at Kamgar Putala Vasahat, Rajiv Gandhi Nagar and Juna Tofkhana in Shivaji Nagar area in order to continue the construction work of the respective Metro station.

Maha Metro’s lawyer, Advocate General Ashustoh Kumbhkoni told the court the construction was delayed and stopped due to the court’s stay order on evictions and related work since the onset of the pandemic. He also said that the Maha Metro has already conducted a survey and has made a list of all those slum dwellers who are eligible for rehabilitation.

The High Court stated, “Beyond August 30th, you (Maha Metro) will be free to follow due process of law.” The court also said that the ineligible slum dwellers who will have to evict are free to approach the court for legal support.
