Pune, 13th December 2024: Marathi cinema is set to receive a significant boost as auditoriums within the jurisdiction of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) will now screen Marathi films. This development follows a meeting between artists and the PMC’s Cultural Department on Thursday, during which the Municipal Administration responded positively to the long-standing demand of Marathi filmmakers and artists.

The meeting, organized to address the lack of screening opportunities for Marathi films, saw discussions on identifying suitable auditoriums and creating a mechanism to facilitate screenings. Sunil Ballal, Deputy Commissioner of the PMC Cultural Department, assured attendees of the administration’s commitment to the cause.

The gathering included notable figures such as Nationalist Congress Party (Ajit Pawar faction) State President for the Cultural Department Babasaheb Patil, actress Gargi Phule, actor Vijay Patwardhan, All Artists Foundation President Yogesh Supekar, and producers Kaustubh Kulkarni, Machhindra Dhumal, and Upendra Kulkarni. Rajesh Kamthe, Chief Manager of Auditoriums, also participated in the discussions.

Babasaheb Patil highlighted the challenges faced by Marathi filmmakers, stating, “Marathi films often struggle to find a place in cinema halls due to the dominance of Hindi and South Indian films. This has led to significant financial losses for producers. After consistent follow-ups, the Municipal Cultural Department has finally responded positively, paving the way for Marathi films to get their due audience.”

The initiative aims to provide a platform for Marathi cinema, ensuring it gets the visibility and support it deserves. With the Municipal Corporation’s backing, artists and producers are optimistic about a brighter future for regional films in Pune.
