Massive Seizure Of Banned Goan Liquor In Pune: Luxury Bus Intercepted, Three Arrested With Whisky Bottles Worth Rs 43 Lakhs

Katraj, 6th October 2023: The State Excise Flying Squad No. 1 today seized a large stock of Goan liquor being transported in a luxury bus in Pune’s Katraj area. The operation led to the arrest of three individuals involved in the illicit trade.

According to Inspector S.L. Patil of the State Excise department, the team received confidential information about the illegal activity. While patrolling the vicinity of Katraj on Old Pune-Satara Road, the squad intercepted a six-wheeler luxury bus in front of the Bharat Petrol Pump.

Upon inspection, they discovered 180 unsealed bottles (15 boxes) of Bagpiper Classic Whisky, a brand prohibited in Maharashtra but legal in Goa. The seized liquor has an estimated value of Rs. 42,90,000.

The accused have been identified as Ganesh Balkrishna Chavan, 50, a resident of Sindhudurg district; Akshay Anant Jadhav, 32, a resident of Nalasopara (West), Palghar district; and Umesh Sitaram Chavan, 37, a resident of Kasarwadi, Avlegaon, Kudal, Dist. Sindhudurg. All three have been taken into custody.

A case has been registered against the accused under sections 65 (5) (5), 81, 83, 90, and 108 of the Mumbai Prohibition Act 1949. Sub inspector, B.S. Ghuge, is leading the ongoing investigation.
