Kondhwa, 27th October 2023: A seemingly innocuous incident involving a misfiring silencer set off a chain of events that led to a dramatic police pursuit on NIBM Road late Wednesday night. Two vigilant traffic wardens, upon hearing the unexpected noise, initially believed it to be gunfire shots, prompting a swift response from the police.

The situation escalated when the white SUV, in question, disregarded signals to stop at a nakabandi checkpost and sped through. The unfolding events fueled suspicion, considering the SUV’s unconventional behavior. As it unraveled, the occupants were revealed to be five youths, aged 20-22, hailing from affluent families in Bhekrainagar and Tukainagar.

The youngsters, returning from a party at a Lullanagar eatery, found themselves in a state of panic as the police signaled them to halt near Jyoti Hotel on NIBM Road around midnight on Wednesday. Instead of complying, the SUV driver opted to reverse, resulting in the misfiring of the vehicle’s silencer. The subsequent acceleration through the checkpost further heightened tensions.

Senior Inspector Santosh Sonawane of the Kondhwa police shed light on the sequence of events. “The SUV driver initially reversed, causing the misfiring of its silencer. The driver then accelerated, breaking through the checkpost and heading towards Undri at full speed,” he explained. The responding police team initiated a pursuit, spurred by the mistaken belief that the misfiring sound was gunfire.

The chase continued until Mantarwadi, where the police eventually lost sight of the fleeing SUV, marking the end of the pursuit. Nevertheless, the registration number of the vehicle was noted, facilitating subsequent efforts to trace both the SUV and its occupants.

On Thursday, the police detained the five youths for questioning. Senior Inspector Sonawane stated, “We are issuing notices to them before releasing them with a warning.”
